Over the last few months there have been a few changes to Quality reporting regulatory programs. The 2018 IPPS Final Rule overrode the requirements from the 2017 IPPS Final Rule. It makes you wonder, "Is anything ever final in quality reporting?"Read More
For years, hospitals have relied on manually abstracting their quality measures to get an accurate picture of their hospital’s quality of patient care. Over the last five years or so, the attention has shifted to Electronic Clinical Quality Measures or eCQMs. This shift has intensified since 2016 when CMS, followed by The Joint Commission, started requiring eCQM data submission to successfully complete their quality reporting programs.
This left us wondering, “how do hospitals feel about their chart-abstracted measures in light of this inclusion of eCQM data?”
This week, we reveal the results of our recent survey of Medisolv hospitals and how they feel about these two types of quality measures.Read More
Are any of these value-based purchasing programs actually working? Well a safe answer may be, "perhaps." On any given day you could find these two contrasting headlines:
The thing is, both are true. According to the National Scorecard on Rates of Hospital-Acquired Conditions 2010 to 2015, Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) have shown a 21 percent decrease across that time span. And yet every year when CMS releases the list of hospitals penalized for their HAC scores, we see that there are still many hospitals across the country still struggling with controlling their HACs.Read More
* NOTE Since this blog was written, The Joint Commission has updated their eCQM submission deadline for 2017. The deadline is now June 29, 2018.
Just when you thought you had it all figured out, they change their mind. If you hadn’t already heard, both CMS and The Joint Commission have changed their eCQM requirements for the 2017 reporting period.
At the beginning of August, CMS released their 2018 IPPS final rule which lowered the eCQM requirements for the Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) program. Then, in mid-August, The Joint Commission followed suit, lowering the requirements for their ORYX ® initiative for quality improvement program.Read More
Hospitals reporting to the CMS IQR program will feel the burden of electronically reporting ease up a bit in 2017. At least that’s how CMS is hoping hospitals will feel when they review the final rule that was released recently. The final rule covers the requirements for the Inpatient Prospective Payments Systems for 2018 with additional modifications to the 2017 reporting year.

So, what’s your plan for reporting to the CMS Quality Payment Program (QPP)? Many providers who are facing an uphill battle to simply understand what is required of them in 2017 are opting to do absolutely nothing in the first year. And now, CMS has released the QPP proposed rule for year two. How can you prepare for changes in 2018 when you're not yet sure what you're doing for 2017?

What do the words “eCQM data validation” mean to you? Let’s suppose that you’ve gone through the process of implementing eCQMs. Now what? And yes, we should start with a big “congratulations” if you have made it that far. Implementing eCQMs is a big project by itself. But now, what’s your plan? Do you have a team that’s ready to jump in and analyze your eCQM results and address any gaps in performance? Or was your plan to just submit your eCQMs to the required regulatory programs and be done with it?
Well, you know where we are going with this. In today’s world of ever-changing regulations tied to Medicare reimbursements, it’s better that you begin the process of validating your eCQM data now. That way, when CMS sets eCQM thresholds and then publishes those results on Hospital Compare, your hospital will be ready with accurate eCQM data.
This week, we reveal the tools that our most successful hospitals use to validate their eCQM data.Read More
