Medisolv’s Role in Reducing Radiation Risks: Ensuring Safer CT Scans for Patients

Columbia, MD, (March 8, 2025) — Medisolv, a leader in healthcare quality management software, is committed to supporting hospitals and healthcare providers as they navigate the complexities of radiation safety in medical imaging.
As part of this commitment, Medisolv is helping healthcare organizations manage and reduce the risks associated with CT scans, a widely used diagnostic tool that, when not properly regulated, can expose patients to unnecessary radiation.
CT scans are essential in diagnosing a range of life-threatening conditions, from cancers to aneurysms. However, research has shown that the radiation doses used in these scans can vary dramatically from one facility to another. Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a professor at the University of California-San Francisco, has spent over a decade studying the link between CT scans and cancer. Her research reveals concerning discrepancies in radiation levels, with some patients exposed to up to 15 times more radiation than others undergoing the same procedure for similar medical conditions.
In recent years, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued new regulations to address these concerns, mandating that hospitals and imaging centers collect and share data on the radiation levels of their CT scanners. These regulations, which began rolling out in 2025, are a crucial step in ensuring that radiation dosages are kept within safe and effective levels. As part of these efforts, Medisolv is partnering with healthcare providers to help them comply with these new data collection and reporting requirements, which aim to enhance patient safety and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure.
Key Highlights:
-
Rising Concerns: Studies indicate that up to 2% of cancer cases in the U.S. may be linked to excessive radiation from CT scans.
-
Medisolv’s Role: Medisolv is helping healthcare organizations manage CT scan data to ensure compliance with the new CMS regulations, reducing patient exposure to harmful radiation.
-
Enhanced Safety: With CMS’ phased approach to implementing new rules, Medisolv is providing the tools necessary to track radiation exposure, leading to safer imaging practices.
Medisolv’s Excessive Radiation eCQMs in Production:
Medisolv has all three Excessive Radiation eCQMs in production in the ENCOR for Electronic Measures application and is ready to support our customers who have implemented the measures: CMS 1074 (IQR), CMS 1206 (OQR), and CMS 1056 (QPP).
Preparing for the 2027 Measurement Year:
Hospitals are required to submit the OQR ExRad eCQM for the 2027 measurement year. We suggest they start working on preparing now because of the potentially long lead time to get translation software in place, validate, and improve results ahead of submission.
Support for All Customers:
We will support the submission of these measures for all customers. We are able to support voluntary submission in 2026 and required submission in 2027.
While CT scans are a critical tool for diagnosis, it’s essential that they are used safely and efficiently. As the number of CT scans performed annually continues to rise, these new regulations are more important than ever in ensuring that patients receive the best care without being exposed to unnecessary risks.
Medisolv is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts, helping healthcare providers optimize quality management and improve patient safety in imaging. As the healthcare industry embraces these new standards, Medisolv remains committed to supporting organizations in their pursuit of safer, more effective care for all patients.
